We asked 40 hiring managers across our corporate partners what separates a strong junior hire from a struggling one. Almost none of the answers were about tool proficiency.
The recurring gaps were: knowing when to escalate an ambiguous result instead of guessing, documenting a decision well enough that a colleague can audit it, and pushing back on a stakeholder’s flawed assumption before building anything.
All three are teachable, and all three are now explicit grading criteria in our professional and corporate tracks — not soft add-ons, but assessed outcomes.
